Sam Burgess set for England Saxons bow

Sam Burgess - Cropped

Sam Burgess has been named in the England Saxons squad to face Ireland Wolfhounds on Friday and is set to take another step towards his international rugby union bow in Cork.

The former South Sydney Rabbitohs man switched codes last year and made his Bath debut in November, with the 26-year-old now set to start in the centre alongside Wasps' Elliot Daly.

Elsewhere in the Saxons squad, Kieran Brookes of the Newcastle Falcons has been called up to the senior squad as training cover for David Wilson.

Burgess' Bath team-mate Wilson is being treated for a nerve impingement in his neck and, as such, will not train on Friday.

England's head coach Stuart Lancaster will hope Wilson does not join the lengthy list of absentees ahead of the Six Nations with the likes of Ben Morgan (broken leg) and Owen Farrell (knee) both ruled out of the competition.

Injury fears also remain over Geoff Parling (knee), Brad Barritt (knee), Kyle Eastmond (shoulder) and Tom Wood (ankle) ahead of England's opener against Wales in Cardiff on February 6.
