Saints out to scratch four-year itch, Clermont and Saracens face off for top spot

Northampton Saints flanker Calum Clark has his sights firmly set on a place in the European Champions Cup final ahead of Saturday's winner-takes-all Pool Five clash with Racing Metro.

The teams are currently tied on 19 points at the top of the group and meet for the chance to secure a home draw in the quarter-finals.

Such has been the dominance of the two sides in their pool, the losers are well-placed to progress as one of three runners-up, and Clark says it is little surprise to see the battle between Saints and Racing go down to the wire.

"You kind of expected it to come down to one of these games," he told SaintsTV. "It's a huge occasion for us at home this week; an exciting game and one you want to play in for sure.

"Being at home is definitely an advantage for sure, but they're full of great players and they caused us a few problems at their place [a 20-11 win for Racing], so we'll have to prepare properly and play flat out."

Saints - winners of last year's Challenge Cup - are gunning for their first final in European rugby's premier tournament since 2011, and Clark is becoming frustrated by the wait.

"We got to the final [Heineken Cup in 2011] and were disappointed with that," he added. "We haven't really kicked on for the past three years and that’s a frustration.

"It is nice to be where we are in our group and to have a chance of going through and hopefully getting the home quarter-final, but we know it’s going to be a big job on Saturday."

Benetton Treviso host Ospreys in the pool's other, dead rubber, clash.

It's a similar story in Pool One, which sees Clermont Auvergne and Saracens face off for top spot, while Munster and Sale Sharks play for pride.

Leinster and Wasps are also going head-to-head in a bid to top Pool Two. The Irish province currently hold a two-point advantage over their Premiership opponents, but third-placed Harlequins - away at Castres - are lurking ready to snatch second place from whoever suffers defeat in Coventry.

Bath and Glasgow Warriors will be praying for a Toulouse defeat when they meet at the Recreation Ground in Pool Four.

Group leaders Toulouse - one point clear of Bath and two ahead of Glasgow - visit Montpellier on Sunday and kick off one hour after the pool's other fixture.

Pool Three has been already been decided, with defending European champions Toulon finishing top, but Leicester Tigers will be hoping to boost their points tally with a win at Ulster to enhance their chances of qualifying as runners-up.

Toulon head to Scarlets for their last pool fixture.
