Saints extend lead as Bath beaten

Northampton Saints extended their advantage at the top of the Premiership table with an unconvincing 17-13 win over Harlequins.

The league leaders led just 7-6 at the interval at Franklin's Gardens as they struggled to break down a determined Quins defence.

However, James Wilson's try put them further ahead before Quins prop Kyle Sinckler was sin-binned, with Tom Wood capitalising as he crossed for the Saints' third five-pointer to settle the contest.

The victory leaves Saints 12 points clear at the summit after Bath suffered a slip-up at Exeter Chiefs that drops them out of the top four.

A hat-trick of penalties from England Saxons fly-half Henry Slade helped Exeter to a 16-6 success at Sandy Park, marking their first win over Bath in 10 attempts and leapfrogging them above the Somerset outfit into third place.

Saracens went second courtesy of a 22-17 triumph over Newcastle Falcons as three second-half three pointers from substitute Ben Spencer made the difference for the hosts, who had trailed 17-13 shortly after half-time.

Wasps overcame Gloucester 32-21 to complete a group of three teams on 48 points, while Leicester Tigers are only a point behind that trio following a 28-8 win in an ill-tempered affair with Sale Sharks

Tom Arscott and Magnus Lund were sin-binned in the first half for the visitors, with Tigers centre Seremaia Bai then seeing yellow in the second half.

Elsewhere, London Irish heaped further misery on winless London Welsh by running in eight tries in an emphatic 50-12 victory.
