Rugby World Cup 2015 chief executive Debbie Jevans has stepped down for personal reasons just six months before the tournament is due to get under way.

Jevans served as director of sport for the London 2012 Olympic Games before being appointed to her role with England Rugby 2015.

Chief financial officer Stephen Brown has now been promoted to managing director to cover Jevans' departure and will work alongside chairman Andy Cosslett.

"This is the right decision for me to make at this time," Jevans is widely quoted as saying. "I am immensely proud of the team and all that we have achieved in the time that I have been chief executive.

"Everything is in place to ensure that this is the best Rugby World Cup ever, and I am confident my team will deliver an exceptional tournament.

"The organisation is strong, there is a great team in place and I am really looking forward to watching the Rugby World Cup as a fan later this year."

The World Cup gets under way on September 18, when hosts England take on Fiji at Twickenham.
