Director of rugby Andy Robinson believes the capture of Gavin Henson signals Bristol's intentions to challenge at the top of English rugby.

The Championship leaders have agreed a one-year deal with the former Wales international, who will move to Ashton Gate for the start of next season.

Henson is the third major signing by Bristol along with Tom Varndell and Marc Jones, with Robinson hoping to secure promotion so that the trio arrive at a Premiership club.

Robinson is keen to get working with Henson, and suggested the new surroundings could be just what the player needs after a frustrating season with Bath where he has only made six appearances.

"I'm really pleased that Gavin is going to be joining us, he's a quality rugby player," said Robinson.

"He has got a good all-round attacking game, and ability to distribute which is important for us. He's a very good kicker as well and a good defender.

"He's had a number of games for Bath that has helped him get a [good] level of rugby back, he wants to get back on the rugby field and we can give him that ability.

"We'll be discussing with Bath to see if they're prepared to loan him to us, but obviously he is a Bath player and it will be down to what they decide.

"I think Gavin will be inspired by the stadium, the support, the pitch and with the players he'll be playing around. For him coming here can only be a positive."
