Record crowd watch Saracens beat Harlequins, Exeter beaten at Leicester

saracens - CROPPED

A world record crowd watched on as Saracens defeated London rivals Harlequins 42-14 at Wembley on Saturday.

The previous record for a club match was set at the same fixture last season, but the 84,068 in attendance this weekend helped post a new marker.

However, the encounter got off to a dreadful start for hosts Saracens, with Jack Clifford running in a try inside 30 seconds after charging down a Neil de Kock clearance.

Mark McCall's men responded well, though, and Chris Wyles and Chris Ashton both touched down to help establish a 21-8 lead at the interval.

Ashton scored a second after the break, before Wyles made sure of the bonus point and Billy Vunipola added further gloss to a convincing victory.

Charlie Hodgson, though, was forced to relinquish kicking duties on his 100th Saracens appearance following a couple of wayward efforts.

The result lifts Saracens into second, two points ahead of Leicester Tigers, who beat Exeter Chiefs 25-18 to go third.

Freddie Burns outscored Henry Slade by four penalties to one in the first half and, despite seeing the visitors cross the whitewash twice in the second period, the Tigers held on for the win.

Geoff Parling - set to join Chiefs next season - scored the hosts' only try shortly after the hour mark, as the Sandy Park outfit slipped to fourth.

In the day's remaining clash, London Irish held off a Newcastle Falcons fightback to register a morale-boosting 22-21 win at the Madejski Stadium.

That result means basement club London Welsh survive for another day, but need to pick up a bonus-point victory in each of their last five matches and hope Newcastle do not secure up another point.

Welsh have lost all of their matches so far this season.
