Sam Hidalgo-Clyne finished with a club-record 28 points in the European Challenge Cup as Edinburgh clinched top spot in Pool Four with a 38-20 win over Bordeaux-Begles.

With guaranteed qualification to the quarter-finals on offer for the victor of Friday's encounter at the Murrayfield, it was the hosts who dominated proceedings.

Fly-half Hidalgo Clyne was the star of the show with two tries, three conversions and four penalties on his way to a record-breaking evening in the Scottish capital.

Centre Matt Scott and prop WP Nel were also among the try scorers for Alan Solomons' men, as Edinburgh comfortably booked their place in the last eight.

Bordeaux, who were playing in Scotland for the first time, ensured respectability to the scoreboard as Baptiste Serin and Pierre Bernard both touched down.

Bernard converted both tries, while France international Lionel Beauxis also added six points with the boot, but it was not enough to prevent Bordeaux's campaign from grinding to a halt.
