The Kiwis are out to extend their imposing 25-match winning streak against Wales, when the two nations meet at Millennium Stadium - the scene of Mealamu's Test debut 12 years ago - on Saturday.

Mealamu, preparing for Test cap number 123, said there is serious competition for spots in Steve Hansen's side, with a World Cup around the corner in 2015.

"When you talk about that genuine want to play in the weekend, there is good competition in the team as well which is driving it," the 35-year-old said.

"Guys really want to play, nobody wants to be sitting in the stands, that's a big driver."

Mealamu said the players were not worn out by the All Blacks' brilliant season - they have lost just one of their 13 Tests in the calendar year.

"It's around a good mindset. We've arrived really excited about the challenge we have this weekend. I looked around the gym this morning and the energy was really good," Mealamu said.

"They [the coaches] have taken the learnings over the past two years and arriving at this game there is genuine excitement at playing here in Wales."

The veteran forward said the All Blacks were wary of the breakdown battle against the Welsh, who come into the Test off a 17-13 win over Fiji.

"A part of the game they do really do well in the northern hemisphere, is contest that breakdown," Mealamu said.

"For us especially as forwards it is a constant work on and something we want to keep on improving. It's a vital part of our game and if we can nail it really well it really sets our team alight."

Flanker Sam Cane said the culture among the players was harmonious, as they continued to prepare for their World Cup defence.

"We've have a big a big focus on getting up and into your work and enjoying each other's company," he said.

"You only have to look we have guys who aren't mentally and physically fatigued because they've been looked after and managed over the past three weeks.

"You can often tell how we are feeling by the laughter and the energy in the gym and places like that and there is a good feel.

"We just have to hold that throughout the week and let it peak on Saturday."
