Munster edge into second with Edinburgh win

Munster edged ahead of Ulster into second place in the Pro12 with a 34-3 demolition of Edinburgh at Murrayfield on Saturday.

Ulster had earlier strengthened their position in the top four with a 27-20 win at Connacht, but the convincing nature of Munster's bonus-point win saw them jump ahead of their compatriots on points difference.

When Tom Heathcote kicked three points in the opening few minutes, little did Edinburgh realise that would be their lot for the day.

Munster, though, were slow in punishing their hosts - Duncan Casey's converted try and an Ian Keatley penalty sending them in with a 10-3 lead at the break.

But the Irish province stepped up their game in the second half, with CJ Stander touching down before Tim Visser was sent to the sin bin.

The man advantage spurred Munster on and Conor Murray, Simon Zebo and Keith Earls all went over in the space of less than 10 minutes to seal the bonus point.

At the Galway Sportsground, Tommy Bowe touched down twice as Ulster held off a late fightback to dent Connacht's hopes of a European Champions Cup berth.

However, a losing bonus point keeps Connacht ahead of Scarlets in sixth, which would be enough to earn them a spot for next term.

Scarlets might rue their inability to find one more try, as they fell one touchdown short of the bonus point that would have lifted them above Connacht in a 28-26 win at Zebre.

In the end, though, the Llanelli outfit were simply thankful to come away with the win - Rhys Priestland splitting the posts in the dying seconds to snare victory.
