League v Union - "Rugby is just a butch version of tennis"

In a scathing attack on the 15-man game, UK rugby league columnist Mike Andrews has unloaded in a piece published on the RugbyAM website.

He wrote: "There's been a lot of media hype around the Rugby Union World Cup being held in England, but frankly there really shouldn't be, because it is full of unfit players and players that genuinely lack the types of enterprise that the smaller code of Rugby possesses, even if they do tempt away some of our biggest stars to stand around for 80 minutes bored."

But Mike was only just warming up.

"The fact that they have called it the 'Rugby' World Cup instead of the Rugby Union World Cup just goes to show that the humans in the southern part of the country have nothing but pig-ignorance towards a much more entertaining brand of Rugby," he continued.

Andrews believes union bosses realise league is the more viable code of the two, illustrated by the Wigan-St Helens Super League game that went up against the England-Fiji World Cup match last weekend.

"The level of intensity between the two was miles apart with the league derby head and shoulders above the union game, as it had hardly any stoppages whereas most the England backs could have watched Netflix for 30 minutes before ever seeing any sight of the ball," he wrote.

"The skill factor in the league game was also much higher (and) ultimately superior entertainment to the 15-man code.

"When Sam Burgess – league's most famous face – came on for England after 62 minutes he didn't look out of place and neither has any of the other league converts in recent times."

Andrews signed off by describing union as a 'butch version of tennis' and predicting its demise in England.

"One day the paint will dry and people from all over the country will realise that union is just a butch version of tennis, and this 'Rugby' World Cup is just a place where boredom grows and athletes become unfit, skill-reduced and lazy," he said.
