It was a war dance that did rugby icon Jonah Lomu proud.

There was already a lot of emotion on show at Eden Park in Auckland on Monday as the greats of New Zealand rugby gathered to say farewell to one their favourite sons, however, it was a rousing haka by All Blacks past and present that gave people goosebumps.

Legends such as Wayne Shelford, Tana Umaga and Josh Kronfeld performed the tribute as Lomu's coffin - which was carried by the likes of current All Black Jerome Kaino and NRL star Manu Vatuvei - was raised to meet the challenge.

World Rugby chairman Bernard Lapasset said Lomu was rugby's first global superstar and his contribution to the sport was immeasurable.

"He will be forever be a big part of rugby’s story," Lapasset said.

"He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. His contribution to rugby cannot be overstated.”

The ceremony was the final public memorial for the 40-year-old who died suddenly on November 18.
