Fury made the comments on BBC Radio this week ahead of his heavyweight showdown with Wladimir Klitschko this weekend.

"I think being in a democratic world means we have to be open to different things. Why don't they make drugs totally legal in sports and then it would be fully fair?" the outspoken 27-year-old told BBC Radio.

"If the governing bodies want to do that, it will be a bit fairer.

"You can't tell me that 99 per cent of these sportspeople ain't taking drugs if they've got bodies like Greek gods.

"If a man wants to pump himself full of drugs it's only shortening his life isn't it?

"When you're pumping yourself full of drugs it's putting pressure on your heart, your liver, your lungs, your kidneys.

Mitchell, the former Western Force and Waratahs back who starred for Australia as the Wallabies made the Rugby World Cup final this year, took exception to Fury’s comments.

Mitchell, who now plays for French powerhouse Toulon, questioned the British heavyweight’s position as a role model and threw his support behind Ukrainian champion Klitschko.

"Batman" refers to a press conference in September during which Fury wore a Batman outfit and staged a mock fight with another bloke dressed as the Joker.

Mitchell gained immediate support on twitter, with fellow pro rugby player Mouritz Botha and several rugby clubs chiming in on the issue.
