Coventry move can catapult Wasps to success – Gomarsall

Wasps announced they were to leave their current home at Adams Park in October, with the Ricoh Arena named as their new base from December.

They have struggled in the Premiership this season with just four wins from nine matches, leaving them in seventh place, while they have 12 points from four games in the European Rugby Champions Cup.

Saturday sees the club play their first match in Coventry when they face London Irish in the league, and former England man Gomarsall - who played for Wasps between 1993 and 1999 - says the switch can help revive Wasps' form.

"It wasn't a surprise, it was a necessity for the sustainability and future of the club," he told Perform.

"The reality is that it had to be done. I think it's a huge positive step for Wasps' future and I can only see positives and benefits.

"It can work, people genuinely want to come and watch top class rugby in a quality environment, where the experience is heightened.

"The facilities at the Ricoh Arena would be the highest standard in the Premiership, it is a 2015 Rugby World Cup venue, it will be an incredible atmosphere when it's full.

"The big job for Wasps is to get people in. Things can quickly turn around - look at Toulon, you can't get a ticket now. If Wasps can imitate that then in a quick space of time they'll have done a cracking job.

"I think they will initially find it a challenge, but if Wasps are successful on the field people will turn up in their droves. I think Wasps have a real opportunity to really pull them in.

"There is a huge population there which is a massive opportunity for them, the future fan base for many years to come."
