Clermont out to avoid repeat performance

Clermont Auvergne will be out to banish memories of last season's semi-final humiliation when they take on Saracens in the European Rugby Champions Cup last four on Saturday.

The Top 14 outfit were thumped 46-6 by Sarries at Twickenham at the same stage of the 2013-14 Heineken Cup, with the Premiership club going on to lose the Cardiff final to Toulon.

A win apiece in the two Pool One matches between the sides this term sets up an intriguing tie in Saint-Etienne and Clermont are taking huge encouragement from their convincing 37-5 victory over Northampton Saints in the quarter-finals.

"Beating Saints in the manner that we did has given us a lot of confidence and we should be able to play that way when called upon, and I think this Saturday we will definitely be called upon to raise our game against Saracens," wrote centre Jonathan Davies in his Sky Sports column.

"There is a lot of talk about the history between Clermont and Saracens – but what they are talking about is the semi-final last year when Saracens beat us 46-6.

"We have played each other twice in the group stages already this year and it's one apiece.

"We have not mentioned last year's semi at all – quite a few of the players have changed and we are a different team now. We will focus on our game and not be worrying about what has happened in the past."

Clermont were edged 11-10 at home by Oyonnax domestically on Saturday, but Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall refuses to take the fixture lightly.

"Our experience says that in games as big as this, you need your warriors," he said. "We're going to try and make life very difficult for them and put them under pressure in certain areas.

"As a club, we admire Clermont as much as anybody because they keep coming back for more.

"We always say we want to give ourselves a chance in every competition, and they do that year in year out and respond to setbacks extremely well. They are a very good team."

Clermont are on a six-match winning run in the competition, mirroring their form prior to losing to Saracens in last season's semi-final, with McCall's men responsible for Clermont's last two European defeats.

That said, Clermont have won four of their six meetings with Saracens and will be keen for a return to winning ways this weekend.

England fly-half Owen Farrell is named among the Saracens replacements having missed three months after picking up a knee injury when these sides last met in January.
