Cheika hails Aussie attitude

Australia head coach Michael Cheika hailed his side's attitude and belief in the wake of their dramatic Rugby Championship victory over South Africa in Brisbane.

The home side trailed 20-7 after an hour of a pulsating contest at Suncorp Stadium, but clawed their way back to claim a famous 24-20 win courtesy of an after-the-buzzer try from Tevita Kuridrani.

Adam Ashley-Cooper had scored the game's first try after 34 minutes, before the visitors seized control courtesy of five-pointers from Eben Etzebeth and debutant Jesse Kriel. Australia rallied late, however, and were given a glimmer of hope when Michael Hooper forced his way over with six minutes left.

Kuridrani then completed the comeback to strike a potentially significant psychological blow against South Africa ahead of September's World Cup and leave Cheika understandably delighted.

"To me, rugby is all about attitude," he said.

"The way we came back to win after the 80th minute is something you have to learn how to do and we'll take a lot of belief from that."

It was the TMO who finally confirmed that Kuridrani had managed to ground the ball to prevent the hosts from suffering what would have been a fifth loss in the last six meetings between the two sides, and Cheika acknowledged that the margin between victory and defeat had been a fine one.

"It came down to a blade of grass really," he said.

"It was the first time with a new shape and set-up so we knew everything wasn't going to flow. We learnt a lot. You can't let three clear opportunities [for tries] go begging in a game."

Quade Cooper and Matt Giteau both produced mixed performances on their return to the Test arena, while a knee injury prevented Will Genia from returning for the second half.

Skipper Stephen Moore, meanwhile, excelled as part a surprisingly solid Australian scrum and he too praised his side's mental strength.

"The character, the belief in each other to go for it in the end, is something I’m really proud of," he said.
