The most capped Test player of all-time, McCaw's expected announcement will come just one day after the tragic death of another legend of New Zealand rugby, Jonah Lomu, and months after the passing of Jerry Collins.
However McCaw will still end his career on a high, after recently becoming the first Test captain to lift the Webb Ellis Cup a second time, with another dominant World Cup showing.
The 34-year-old said after the World Cup win that he wanted to enjoy the moment and that he would consider his future in the following weeks.
