Sanzar replaces Walsh

Walsh replaced for Reds-Brumbies

Sanzar has replaced referee Steve Walsh for Saturday's Super 14 clash between the Brumbies and Reds in Canberra, following adverse comments from the Brumbies in the wake of his handling of their match against the Waratahs at ANZ Stadium on the weekend.

However Brumbies five-eighth Matt Giteau faces a fine and possible suspension as a result of comments he made about Walsh on Monday.

Asked how the team would react if Walsh's appointment to control the game against the Reds was not reviewed, Giteau responded 'I don't know if we'll turn up - what's the point?'.

On Tuesday, the Australian Rugby Union referred those comments to the Sanzar secretariat in New Zealand for a ruling on whether Giteau had breached the players' code of conduct, as there is a clause in players' contracts barring them from public criticism of referees and touch judges.

Should that be the determination, it is likely that Giteau would face a judiciary hearing on Wednesday evening or Thursday.

Walsh and Brumbies skipper Stephen Hoiles staged something of a running battle throughout the match, with several penalties against the ACT-based side appearing to be harsh calls and some of the referee's comments to Hoiles and other Brumbies players, particularly when resetting scrums, sounding condescending or overly aggressive.

To add fuel to the fire, Walsh disallowed a try to Adam Ashley-Cooper without consulting the video referee, ruling that he had not played the ball immediately on being tackled and had essentially made a double-movement in rolling over the tackler to reach out and plant the ball.

While that ruling may have been correct, the Brumbies were left fuming and called for Walsh to be replaced, coach Andy Friend saying 'the first 30 minutes it wasn't a very even contest'.

Sanzar referees boss Lyndon Bray has bought into the controversy by suggesting that Giteau should be held accountable for his comments, adding that it would be 'nice' if the Brumbies and Wallabies playmaker was suspended.

"I just want him to be answerable for his comments and accountable for that," Bray told Radio Sport.

"I'm not emotive about what happens to him, just pragmatic about it, and the reality is he's quite out of line," he added.

"Where Giteau stepped over the line, in my opinion, is he's gone to a whole emotional aspect about not turning up."

Meanwhile Bray explained that the decision to replace Walsh with fellow New Zealander Chris Pollock for Saturday's Brumbies-Reds match was made in the best interests of the game and not because of any pressure caused by Giteau's or Friend's comments.

"We have to look at what's in the best interests of that game and what's in the best interests of Steve as a ref," Bray said.

"We think it would be remiss to ignore what sort of environment is likely to happen if we left Steve refereeing the Brumbies and Reds."

"They've made it very untenable for Steve to be able work in that environment and we're only being responsible to the game in saying this week should be all about the Reds and the Brumbies who both fighting for semi-final spots, and the last thing you want is this week being all about the referee."

"I think if we left Steve on that game that's exactly what the outcome would be."
