France fined for haka breach

10/24/2011 05:52:56 PM

France have been fined 10,000 pounds for advancing on the New Zealand haka before Sunday's Rugby World Cup final.

The International Rugby Board handed down the ruling stating Les Bleus had failed to stay the required distance from the haka, behind the 10-metre line in their own half.

France captain Thierry Dusautoir led his teammates in a V-formation as they steadily progressed towards the customary war dance from the All Blacks at Eden Park in Auckland.

Speaking before the fine, Dusautoir said the team wanted to make a bold statement and believed it was a worthwhile exercise despite the narrow loss.

"At one stage we were so close to them that they wanted to kiss the New Zealanders, but I told them to take it easy. It was a great moment and a moment we will remember all our lives," Dusautoir said.

France coach Marc Lievremont said Dusautoir tried to stop his teammates from encroaching too far and believed the fine was unjustified.

"He tried to stop them, there was a bit of movement bringing them forward."

"But a fine? I don't know."

All Blacks captain Richie McCaw expected something unusual from the French and saw their challenge as an indicator of things to come with the French pushing New Zealand all the way in a 8-7 loss.

"We talked that they'd bring something different and they did, but the game doesn’t start until the whistle blows does it?" McCaw said.

"If anything, it showed us what we were in for and that's exactly what we got."

"They were right up for the game as we expected and they certainly made it tough."

France are not the only side to deploy similar tactics, Ireland famously advanced past the halfway line when facing the haka in 1989.

I am sick and tired of the Haka. It is an act of psychological aggression and to not allow a retaliation is biased and unfair. I vote that whenever the kiwis do it, once they have finished the opposing teams crowd shout aaaayyy hakarena!

No matter what it is, the haka is still a part of New Zealands culture and its important to them. What France did showed immense disrespect for not just the team but the entire country. If countries disrespect the haka and get away with it then other countries that used to be british vassels should be allowed to jeer whenever England sings "God save the queen"

The ABs should be fined every time they do the haka, it is just another way to intimidate before kickoff. They are in breach of modern etiquette... sacred my @ss.. it has been beefed up from the traditional dance and designed to provide an edge... nothing more. Check out the video of the games from the 70s, a bunch of white guys looking at each other so they can copy it.

How can this be cultural when you only see it performed by a rugby team and drunks at parties.

The haka does not belong in any sporting event. It is intmidating and gives NZ an edge. But for the IRB to have a rule around it and then fine the oposing team? Absurdity at its height is what it is. Think if every nation performed a ritual before a sporting event? Some could take a long time. Will the IRB or any other body allow it and change the rules accordingly? Then why is NZ given preferential treatment. What a load of RUBBISH.

It is amazing how people comment about things they no nothing about!!!! The Haka is very much part of the culture of not only the Maori but of all NZlanders that embrace it, and I must say as a Maori ( Tuhoe/Ngati Kahungunu) person, born, bred and raised in AOTEAROA that most pakeha have these traditional ways and respect them.... Yet there are far too many ignorant people in still left in the world that like the whinge about differences....these people are not worth wasting time with .....They will never get it !!!! The Haka is performed everywhere in The country birthdays, weddings, all codes of sport, graduations, school events, funerals, both gov and non-gov organisations events, there are an endless list of occasions..... So take note to those that have been commenting .....make sure you do your research and get your facts right...... So you don't look like an ass!!
