Two tries from prop Wyatt Crockett proved to be the difference as the Crusaders recorded an impressive 20-14 Super Rugby win over the Stormers at Cape Town on Saturday (SA time).
In a match not entirely in keeping with the free-scoring nature of the competition, chances were at a premium and Crockett's taking of his was crucial.
Much of the pre-match talk had centred around the match-up of mid-fielders Jean de Villiers and Sonny Bill Williams, but it was halfback Duvenage who nearly made the first contribution when he broke through to score, only for play to be called back for an incorrect lineout.
Williams then took centre stage with a stunning eighth-minute offload to wing Sean Maitland, who cantered away and then put Crockett in for a try.
First five-eighths Matt Berquist landed the conversion.
The Stormers earned some territory after that and eventually won a penalty which first five-eighths Lionel Cronje banged over with 13 minutes on the clock.
De Villiers then looked to do whatever Williams could, and put wing Johann Sadie into a gap.
From there a try was always on the cards and centre Jaque Fourie galloped up in support to finish things off, with Cronje unable to improve it.
But De Villiers was then caught offside, allowing Berquist to nail another three-pointer and put his side back ahead.
The Stormers were piling forward, though, and forced the Crusaders into giving away another penalty which Cronje tucked away.
That put them ahead and fullback Conrad Jantjes showed his desire to protect that fact with a crunching hit on Williams just before the break.
Berquist kicked another penalty shortly after the restart, only for Cronje to reply and eke his side ahead again.
Williams threw another dream pass out but no-one was on hand to capitalise on it, and Berquist missed a dropped goal as the game entered a critical stage.
Berquist missed a penalty, but was more accurate with a conversion after 64 minutes following another Crockett try after he had dragged four defenders over with him.
That proved to be the final straw for the Stormers and, although replacement back Nick Koster nipped through, they were unable to score again, with Tom Marshall's injury-time sin-binning coming too late for the Stormers to do anything about it.
