Sonny Bill Williams scored his first try for the Chiefs and Arizona Taumalolo crossed twice in a Super Rugby thriller as the Chiefs defeated the Cheetahs 39-33.
The Chiefs moved to the top of the table with their five-try show, as Lelia Masaga and Richard Kahui also dotted down.
In the first meeting between the teams since 2010, when they played out a 25-25 draw in Hamilton, the teams piled on the points in the second half after the first period had concluded with the Chiefs holding a slender 10-9 lead.
With 10 minutes remaining they were tied at 25-25 again, but the visitors to Bloemfontein then pulled clear.
Sias Ebersohn booted an early penalty for the Cheetahs, which was soon cancelled out by Aaron Cruden replying in kind.
Masaga nailed the first try of the match after 20 minutes when he benefited from fine footwork from Andrew Horrell, and Cruden added the extras.
Ebersohn responded with a penalty, and after a spell in which the Chiefs looked likely to stretch their lead, instead it was the hosts who scored next. And again it was Ebersohn's boot adding to the scoreline, as he cut the Chiefs' lead to one point at the break with his third penalty.
Taumalolo crept over for the first of his tries in the 46th minute, and Cruden booted the conversion to open an eight-point lead, but that was soon wiped out as, first, Ebersohn kicked another penalty, and then Ashley Johnson burst through at pace for the Cheetahs' first try of the match.
Ebersohn had been taken off at that stage, and his replacement Johan Goosen added the two points to give the Cheetahs a 19-17 lead.
When Goosen then kicked a pair of penalties to one from Cruden, the Cheetahs were 25-20 in front and looking good to take the points.
A sequence of sustained Chiefs pressure brought the visitors reward though, as a push for the line resulted in prop Taumalolo putting the ball down for his second try.
Cruden missed the conversion, meaning the teams were tied going into the closing 10 minutes.
Williams then intervened, with the All Blacks centre collecting a pass from Tanerau Latimer and barging over for a score - worth a bonus point as his team's fourth - which Cruden added to.
It was effectively contest over when Kahui added a further converted try with five minutes remaining.
Goosen's late try, which he could not convert, and his penalty, secured a losing bonus point for the Cheetahs.
