Braid is back

Braid is back

03/11/2010 03:41:46 AM

Daniel Braid got married in January, but his true love is the new breakdown interpretations that have seen him recapture the form which saw him named New Zealand Player of the Year in 2007.

He also wants Super Rugby players to be eligible for their National team, irrespective of where they are based.

Under the current rules, players based outside of New Zealand are not eligible for All Black selection.

Braid made his All Black debut in 2002 against Wales in Cardiff, aged 21, before playing any of his 59 games for the Blues.

He was born in Tauranga, but was poached by Kings College and lived in Auckland before becoming New Zealand's first player to cross the Tasman as a 'marquee' Australian player almost two years ago.

Under the marquee regulations Braid can stay in Australia for two years – this expires in May at the conclusion of the Super 14. But Reds coach Ewen McKenzie has asked the Australian Rugby Union to bend those rules, in light of his vice captain's new found form and the Melbourne Rebels allowance of 10 overseas players next year.

"The Reds contract was a bit trailblazing," Braid who turned 29 last month said.

"I'm sure the Rebels will get some handy New Zealanders. I like to think I'm making rugby in Australasia more accessible, professional and international."

"Rather than players going to Europe, I want people to play anywhere in Super Rugby but still be eligible for their National side."

Ironically, Braid is living in a Brisbane apartment, which is a block from the river, with his wife Astrid because he ruptured his Achilles tendon one week before the Reds beat the Blues 31-24 in April at Albany last year.

He had planned to take up a lucrative three-year contract at Llanelli Scarlets in Wales, but after the injury he signed on at the Reds and came home for four months rehab.

"I could have gone up there and had a horrible cold winter and time pressures to get back and play," he said.

"But I was able to resign here and we were able to plan our wedding a lot easier than from the UK and I'm really enjoying it so far."

Unlike many No.7s in this year's Super 14 who have struggled to adapt to the new breakdown interpretations that have seen full-arm penalties reinstated and more advantage given to the attacking team, Braid's link play has flourished.

And because rugby in the Southern Hemisphere has been outstanding this year, Braid is unsure, now more than ever, of his future.

Consider his options – McKenzie's desperate bid to keep him at the Reds?

"If we keep a lot of this year's squad and if I make the decision I want to play in Super 15 then I'd definitely have a look at staying," Braid said.

Chasing the Euro in a bid for financial security?

"It's an important time for me at 29. I'll try play for another five years and there's money in the Northern Hemisphere, but there's also opportunities after rugby if you hang around," he said.

What about the carrot dangling at home in 2011, especially after he comprehensively outplayed Tanerau Latimer - one of Richie McCaw's deputies - in last week's 23-18 underdog triumph over the Chiefs in Hamilton – Braid's first win in an Australian jumper on New Zealand soil.

"If I stay in Australasia then
