Boks count the toll

Boks count the toll

Three injuries threaten South Africa's chances of securing back-to-back victories over Australia ahead of Sunday's Tri Nations clash in Bloemfontein.

Key players Butch James, Jannie du Plessis and Flip van der Merwe are all in doubt after failing to train on Monday morning, but little is known about the specifics of their injuries.

First five-eighths James is said to be the worst of the three after picking up an injury in the Springboks' thrilling 44-31 win over the Wallabies at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday, and is thought to be only a slim chance to line up.

South Africa coach Peter de Villiers gave little away about the injured trio, but said the come-from-behind win at Loftus had given the team a boost after four straight defeats.

"The win has changed the mood in the camp and the guys need to build on this from a mental and physical point of view," de Villiers said.

"This is where a positive attitude towards the match will be very important. The Wallabies are world class and we will have to have the right attitude to beat them again, especially on attack."

"But to come back from 7-21 [on Sunday] down showed the character of this team. I am pleased that we did not go into defensive mode towards the end of the match and showed a willingness to attack until the end."

The winner of this Sunday's match will claim second spot in the Tri Nations behind New Zealand, and de Villiers said the Springboks would need to improve defensively if they were to beat the Wallabies again.

"We have yet to achieve anything," he said. "It was nice to get the win because it changed the mood in the changing room and also put smiles on the faces of our fans again. But we still have a lot of work to do."

"We have a brilliant defensive system in place. When we analyse defensive lapses we have to look further than missed tackles or mistakes that are made by individuals."

"The Wallabies put us under pressure and forced us into mistakes. We have to go back and look at what we can do to better deal with that pressure."
