An Eric Chavez RBI in the eight inning has helped the New York Yankees edge out the Texas Rangers 6-5 in the MLB on Sunday.

In the rematch of last year's American League championship series, Omar Beltre opened the Rangers' tally with a home-run in the first inning that also scored Elvis Andrus, but New York pulled one back in the second through Robinson Cano.

Texas' Michael Young stretched the lead in the fourth, but the Yankees fought back with a two-run fifth to tie the scores at 3-3.

Texas then restored their lead in the sixth, as Young hit his second run for the match, but they surrendered the advantage when Curtis Granderson and Derek Jeter wrote their names on the scoresheet at the bottom of the innings.

And despite equalising once more at the top of the seventh, Texas ultimately succumbed to defeat when Chavez swung an RBI that saw Mark Teixeira claim the go-ahead run.

The Cleveland Indians defeated the Baltimore Orioles 4-2, with Grady Sizemore hitting a homer in his first game back since undergoing major knee surgery.

It was the Orioles' seventh consecutive loss, while Cleveland celebrated their 11th victory in 13 games and their seventh straight home win.

The Boston Red Sox resoundingly overcame the Toronto Blue Jays 8-1 with Jaw Lowrie hitting two runs and Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Jacoby Ellsbury collecting three RBIs each.

The Minnesota Twins and the Los Angeles Angels both netted 4-2 wins - the Twins dismissing the Tampa Bay Rays, and the Angels beating the Chicago White Sox.

Elsewhere, the Seattle Mariners clinched a tight victory over the Kansas City Royals 3-2 and the Oakland Athletics overcame the Detroit Tigers 5-1.

The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the St Louis Cardinals 2-1 in their National League clash, courtesy of Matt Kemp's homer that scored Andre Ethier in the ninth inning.

The New York Mets snapped their longest losing streak in seven years, defeating the Atlanta Braves 3-2 as Josh Thole registered two RBIs and one run.

The Pittsburgh Pirates edged the Cincinnati Reds 7-6 largely thanks to a rampant first innings that saw Andrew McCutchen, Jose Tabata, Lyle Overbay and Neil Walker all score.

The Reds clawed back from 5-4 and 6-5 deficits - but they were unable to deny the Pirates a thrilling victory.

Elsewhere, the San Diego Padres beat the Houston Astros 8-6, while the Colorado Rockies were victorious against the Chicago Cubs 9-5.

The lowly Arizona Diamondbacks scored their first win in four when they defeated the San Francisco Giants 6-5.
