The caged octagon used for Ultimate Fighting Championship bouts have been illegal in Victoria even if Mixed Martial Arts events were currently allowed.

But sports minister John Eren has written to Professional Boxing and Combat Sports board in a bid to lift the ban on "safety enclosures", including octagons.

“The only thing that was not legal about it was the actual fencing, which made it safer for those competitors, the officials and the spectators," said Eren in quotes from The Age on Wednesday.

During the build-up to last November’s election, Labor had promised to end the ban on cages.

The first UFC event in Victoria is reportedly scheduled for November 15 and could take place at Etihad Stadium, although venue organisers may be somewhat wary after crowd trouble during the recent darts event in January.
