Freddy Garcia's career as a New York Yankee got off to a winning start on Sunday with his side beating Texas 5-2 at Yankee Stadium.

The 34-year-old, who has previously taken the mound for Seattle, the Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia and Detroit, allowed two hits over six innings in his first start for the Yankees to help his side bounce back from Friday's 5-3 loss to the Rangers.

On a chilly day in New York, Garcia only allowed hits to Adrian Beltre and David Murphy, while Mark Teixeira homered and drove in three runs for the hosts.

In worse news for the American League East-leading Yankees, star Alex Rodriguez is in doubt for Monday's third game against Texas after leaving the match with back stiffness.

Elsewhere in the American League, Kansas City stayed level with Cleveland in the Central division after a 7-0 rout of Seattle at home - their fourth win in succession - while Cleveland inflicted a sixth straight loss on a hapless Baltimore with an 8-3 win.

Boston remain anchored to the foot of the East division despite their 4-1 win over Toronto, and the Los Angeles Angels moved to second in the West standings after a 7-2 rout of the Chicago White Sox on the road to notch up their fourth straight win.

Tampa Bay continued to rebound from their disastrous start with a 4-3 win over Minnesota.

After winning just one of their first nine games, the Rays have now won five on the trot to sit at 6-8 for the season.

The Oakland Athletics enjoyed a 6-2 win over Detroit at home, courtesy of two hits apiece from David DeJesus and Hideki Matsui as Oakland took to Tigers starting pitcher Justin Verlander.

In the National League, San Francisco moved two games clear in second place in the West division thanks to a 5-3 win on the road over Arizona.

The Chicago Cubs evened their season ledger at 7-7 after snapping a seven-game winning streak for Colorado with an 8-3 win, and Houston are still stuck on the bottom of the Central division despite their 5-3 win at home over San Diego.

Atlanta enjoyed two wins in their double header over the New York Mets, winning 4-2 in the first game and 4-0 in the second as the Mets slumped to a 4-11 mark for the season.

Cincinnati moved two games clear on top of the Central division with an 11-2 win over Pittsburgh, while Milwaukee's clash with Washington and Florida's meeting with Philadelphia were both postponed due to rain.
