Usain Bolt confirms 2017 retirement plans

The Jamaican, who holds the world record in the 100 and 200 metres, has previously stated his desire to quit the sport after the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Bolt revealed that his coach, Glen Mills, had attempted to persuade him to prolong his career until the 2020 Games in Tokyo.

However, the 27-year-old is adamant he will end in career in 2017, although he insists he has plenty to achieve before that time comes.

"At the beginning of the season, I was talking to my coach, having our annual meeting. We sat down and we were talking about how long I could go on in track and field for," Bolt explained.

"I was saying 2017 would be the max and he says 'no you could probably go to the Tokyo Olympics if you want' and I was like 'ah, it's kind of far' so it's something on his mind, not my mind. I want to retire in 2017."

Bolt's 100m world record stands at 9.58 seconds and, while he is confident that a sub-nine time is possible, the sprinter has outlined his immediate focus as setting a new mark in the 200m.

"For me, anything is possible, to run under nine seconds it takes hard work and dedication, talent but also focus," he added.

"It's all about that first person making that first step or making that courageous step and deciding they're going to work hard to get there and then everyone will follow.

"This season, me and my coach decided we're going to focus on trying to run faster this season, because there is no championship really, so we definitely targeted the 200 metres, so that's on our mind, but we'll see what happens.

"Hopefully I can stay injury free and everything will go well this season and I can break the world record."
