Four Royals players and two White Sox players were suspended and another player fined by Major League Baseball for their involvement in the chaotic melee that erupted during Kansas City's game at Chicago on Thursday night.

Both benches emptied at the end of the seventh inning after Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura crudely yelled at White Sox outfielder Adam Eaton following a ground out.

White Sox pitcher Jeff Samardzija eventually went after Royals center fielder Lorenzo Cain and tried to throw a punch, but was stopped by third base coach Mike Jirschele. Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez attempted to swing at Samardzija as his momentum carried him to the ground.

Both Ventura and Eaton were remorseful after the incident. This is the second ejection for Ventura this season. Ventura was also fined for an April 19 incident in a game between the Royals and the Athletics. Herrera was suspended five games for throwing behind a batter in that game. He is appealing that suspension.

Unless players appeal, all suspensions will begin on Sunday. As Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports, at least two players will exercise their right to fight the suspension.

In the meantime, the teams will continue their series in Chicago.
