The Paralympic and Olympic athlete shot Ms Steenkamp dead on February 14 2014, but has maintained he mistook her for an intruder in his house.

Pistorius' trial began in early March, when he originally pleaded not guilty to the "wilful and intentional murder" of his girlfriend.

He was convicted of culpable homicide by Judge Thokozile Masipa on September 12, a charge carrying a maximum prison sentence of 15 years.

On Friday it was revealed that he will learn of his sentence on October 21, with prosecutor Gerrie Nel stating that "the minimum term that society will be happy with is 10 years imprisonment".

The defence tried to argue that Pistorius had already served some punishment through the media coverage surrounding the trial, with lawyer Barry Roux claiming that his client was "not only broke but he is broken".

But Judge Masipa insisted that only evidence submitted during court proceedings would be taken into consideration for sentencing.

Mr Nel rejected Mr Roux's assertion that prison was not an appropriate place for Pistorius in light of the fact that he is a double amputee.

He suggested that the 27-year-old is "using shamelessly" his disability in order to lessen the severity of his sentence.

A probation office speaking for Pistorius said on Monday that he should face community service and not prison.

Judge Masipa concluded Friday's proceedings by saying: "I want to thank both counsel for your assistance and your cooperation in this matter. I must say I am very impressed with the way counsel conducted themselves in the way they assisted this court throughout.

"We will reconvene on Tuesday next week at 9.30 [08.30BST]. Court will adjourn."
