Sally Pearson's history-making quest to win three individual titles at the National Athletics Championships this weekend remains on track as she took out the women's 100m event on Saturday night at Olympic Park.

Having eased through the semi-final in first position, Pearson took out the 100m final later in the evening in a time of 11.38s, ahead of Melissa Breen (11.67s) and Charlotte Van Veenendaal (11.68s).

Pearson is also gunning for the 200m sprint and 100m hurdle titles later in the meet.

If Pearson is successful, she will be the first Australian woman in 43 years to claim three national titles, emulating Pam Ryan's effort in winning the 80m and 100m hurdles along with the pentathlon in 1968.

"One down, and a Melbourne PB I think so it-s a good start before another big day tomorrow," Pearson said.

"The conditions here are very similar to what I face in Europe so I can-t think they are bad, I need to learn to put my head down and run and that-s what I am hoping to get out of this weekend."

Along with Pearson, Tamsyn Lewis claimed her 10th 800m national title as she blitzed the final 200 metres to win in a season-best time of 2:00.80.

In the men's event, New South Wales runner James Kaan upset favourite Lachlan Renshaw as he claimed the 800m in 1:47.48.

Aaron Rouge-Serret also took out the men's 100m event as he gears up for Stawell, later in the month.

In more disappointing news, Craig Mottram withdrew from the men's 1500m event prior to the first heat, after his training this week has been interrupted by a lingering Achilles complaint.
