Sprinter Sally Pearson has been successful in her history-making attempt at the National Athletics Championships, claiming three individual titles this weekend at Melbourne's Olympic Park.

After taking out the women's 100m event on Saturday, Pearson completed the trifecta on Sunday when she won the 200m sprint and 100m hurdle titles.

In doing so Pearson has become the first Australian woman in 43 years to claim three national titles, emulating Pam Ryan's effort in winning the 80m and 100m hurdles along with the pentathlon in 1968.

"I think it has been bottling up," and emotional Pearson said after winning the hurdles in a world-class time of 12.83.

"It is such a relief for it to be over and my body is still in one piece."

"I have done 23 races since January and it's been really tough going."

Not to be outdone distance runner Tamsyn Lewis also created some history, winning her 17th national title in the 400m, a day after smashing the field in her favoured 800m.

Only retired throwers Gael Martin (20) and Warwick Selvey (19) have claimed more Australian crowns.

Steve Solomon had a strong win in the men's 400m, holding off Ben Offereins and 2006 Commonwealth champ John Steffensen and Sean Wroe.

The 17-year-old Sydneysider won in 45.58, slashing half a second off a PB that keeps falling at a remarkable rate.

"This time last year I was running 47.7," he said.

"It's a credit to my coach Fira Dvoskina. I came to Fira a year and a half ago having a PB of 50-point and now I'm at 45.5."

"I haven't been in the sport for long but I know that's a massive improvement."

Aaron Rouge-Serret also completed a notable double, winning the 200m to go alongside a successful defence of his 100m crown.

Other winners included Jeff Riseley in the men's 1500m and world champion Dani Samuels in the women's discus.

And Zoe Buckman sprung an upset in the women's 1500m, taking the gold medal in 4:12.85.
