Defending champion Neil Robertson has been knocked out of the World Snooker Championship at the first attempt on Sunday.

The Australian was surprised by Englishman Judd Trump, who won the first-round clash 10-8, much to the delight of the home crowd at The Crucible in Sheffield.

Despite Robertson posting two century breaks, Judd lead the morning session 5-4 after an impressive early showing.

Robertson, ranked no.5 in the world, was expected to fight back and did so, moving into a 7-6 lead before a spirited challenge from Trump.

He won three in a row and although Robertson responded, Trump was able to hang on for victory.

"I feel like I've got a completely different mindset going into this tournament compared to anything I've had since I've been a professional," Trump said afterwards.

In other first round matches, Ali Carter thumped Dave Harold 8-1 while Shaun Murphy went one better and defeated Marcus Campbell 9-0.

In one of two matches that will finish on Sunday, Mark Williams leads fellow Welshman Ryan Day 6-3.

The other match still to be completed is Jamie Cope's clash with Andrew Pagett, which Cope leads 5-4, despite trailing 4-2 at one stage.
