Anthony Mundine's future in doubt after brutal points loss

Anthony Mundine

That's the question being asked after The Man lost to Ghana's Joshua Clottey on points in a brutal WBA International super welterweight title bout at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Wednesday night.

Mundine was knocked to the canvas five times but courageously fought on for 12 rounds before succumbing on points.

At 38 and with this loss now on his record, Mundine's dream of one last big pay day overseas against a top ranked fighter appear over.

"I got caught early and I couldn't recover," Mundine said after the fight.

"Full credit to Joshua, he put me on my back a few times, but I finished the fight.

"I'm not going to think about it (my future). Right now I'm going to take some time off."

Before the fight, Mundine admitted defeat would just about kill off any hope of lining up a fight with one of the big names of world boxing.

He said: "If I lose his one, then there's no point in talking about (Floyd) Mayweather or (Saul) Alvarez or (Miguel) Cotto. Every fighter is a hurdle and I've got to make sure I get over this one."
