Mayweather v Rousey: Round... (can anyone remember)

Rousey Mayweather

Rousey and Mayweather have been going at it for the best part of a year now, constantly jabbing and jibbing each other (with their words of course).

Although Mayweather’s career came to an end last Sunday with a career record of 49-0 in tact following his victory over Andre Berto in Las Vegas, it hasn’t stopped Rousey from firing shots at the future Boxing Hall of Famer.

Following disappointing (and predictable), lower-than-usual numbers at the box office for the Mayweather v Berto fight, Rousey let fly on the American after it was estimated that only 400,000-550,000 people purchased the bout on pay-per-view - Money’s worst showing in nearly 10 years.

“I’m not surprised,” Rousey said when speaking to TMZ.com

“A lot of people were pissed after that Pacquiao fight.

“Fans aren’t dumb.”

The fight that Rousey referenced was a spectacle of minute proportions for fans who had been waiting for years to see the bout, only to be let down by what was built up to be the “Fight of the Century”.

While Mayweather’s poor final performance at the box office seemed to be a representation of the resentment of Mayweather’s empty promises, Rousey has been setting records for the UFC’s pay-per-view.

Rousey’s last fight at UFC190 (which last 34 seconds against Bethe Correia) broke the UFC’s pay-per-view numbers record, with her next fight in Melbourne set to break the attendance record for a UFC card, with 70,000 fans expected at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne.

While Rousey is never likely to make the sort of money that Money does inside the Octagon, she does have the advantage of being universally loved and admired, something that Floyd has seemed to struggle with over his career.

We’ll just have to wait and see.
