Horner raced for RadioShack-Leopard last season and became the oldest ever Grand Tour winner when he took the Vuelta title ahead of Vincenzo Nibali, despite only winning two stages in the race.

However, he was not offered a new contract with the team and was not certain to feature on the World Tour this year until the deal with Lampre-Merida was announced.

"It's official now, Chris Horner joins Lampre-Merida on a one-year deal," the team confirmed on their official Twitter page.

"(Horner) is set to ride both Giro and Vuelta. Welcome on board Chris."

The 42-year-old American will defend his Vuelta title in September, and will also contest the Giro d'Italia, but is not expected to take part in the Tour de France in July to ensure he is fully prepared for the Vuelta.

Lampre will be Horner's 12th team in his 19-year cycling career, and he could make his debut in the Mallorca Challenge next month.
