Kittel: Stage was made for me

The Giant-Shimano rider showed awesome pace in a sprint to the line, leaving Cannondale's Peter Sagan behind to earn his second stage win of this year's event.

And the German conceded that Monday's route from Cambridge to the English capital was perfect for him to exploit his talents.

"The stage today was more a real sprinter's stage," the 26-year-old said. "It was clearly made for that because it wasn't really hard.

"And a sprint finish in front of Buckingham Palace was just awesome. It was a great, straight road to the finish line, a bit wet, a little bit downhill. That was perfect for me."

With home favourite Mark Cavendish having crashed out as he jostled for position at the end of stage one - which was won by Kittel - Omega Pharma-Quick Step now have less of an interest in the sprint finishes, and that has changed Giant-Shimano's tactics.

"The fact Mark Cavendish is out has changed things for us as a sprinter's team, because there won't be that many teams any more who will maybe work for a sprint in the end," Kittel explained.

"We have to take that into account with our planning, but there is still plenty of competition."
