Kenya's Emmanuel Mutai managed to go one better than his second-place finish in last year's London Marathon by claiming victory in Sunday's race.

The 26-year-old smashed the course record for the race when he completed the 42.195km course in two hours four minutes and 39 seconds to take the win from his compatriots Martin Lel and Patrick Makau, who finished second and third respectively after a thrilling sprint to the line.

Mutai's mark broke the previous best of 2:05.10 set by another Kenyan - Samuel Wanjiru - in 2009.

Mutai, who finished runner-up to Ethiopia's Olympic bronze medallist Tsegaye Kebede in last year's London race, paced himself well before making the decisive break with 12km to go.

Kenya also dominated the women's event, with Mary Keitany posting a personal best of 2:19.17 - the fourth-fastest time ever recorded by a woman - on her way to winning.

Russia's Liliya Shobukhova finished in second place, with yet another Kenyan - Edna Kiplagat - taking third.

Keitany was competing in just her second marathon but managed to upstage defending champion Shobukhova - the world no.1 - and after pulling clear at the 24km mark was never threatened.

Keitany set a new world record of 1:05.50 for the half-marathon earlier this year.
