Pittman, who competed at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and finished fourth in the 400m hurdles at the Athens Games four years later, was one of 49 athletes added to Australia's biggest ever winter team on Thursday.

The 31-year-old tried her hand at rowing and boxing after retiring from hurdling in 2012 before opting to concentrate on bobsleigh.

"I really thought my career was over," Pittman told olympics.com.au.

"To be able to come and do something that is really fun and that is very different and something I think we are going to be very good at is something that has drawn me here."

Pittman will partner Astrid Radjenovic in the women's two-man bobsleigh event on February 18 and 19 at the Sanki Sliding Centre.

"Jana trains very hard and has brought a good work ethic to our strength and conditioning," said Radjenovic, who has featured in every Australian female bobsleigh Olympic campaign.

"As for the bobsled side of things she was as much a rookie as everyone else. However she has worked hard to learn fast and contribute a lot to the team."

Pittman will join Paul Narracott, who also competed in athletics (1984) and bobsleigh (1992), as the only athletes to have represented Australia in a summer and winter Olympics.

Other Australian athletes named on Thursday were from the sports of alpine skiing, bobsleigh, cross-country skiing, freestyle skiing, luge, skeleton and snowboard.

They join the seven athletes previously selected from figure, short-track and speed skating, with two additional alpine athletes to be announced following the outcome of an appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Olympic gold medallists Dale Begg-Smith, Torah Bright and Lydia Lassila are Australia's most notable names, with 70 per cent of the team to make their Olympic debuts in Russia.

The Winter Games begin on February 7 in Sochi.
