Hayne hype backed up by impressive numbers

Hayne, who faces a nervous wait ahead of the final roster cut to be made by 6am Sunday (AEST), amassed 175 yards at seven yards per carry to trail only Zach Zenner (183 yards, 5.2 yard average) of the Detroit Lions.

More importantly, the former Parramatta star had 163 yards on 10 punt returns, the position most US analysts expect will earn the 27-year-old his spot on the roster.

But Hayne's unbelievable start to life in the NFL can't simply be measured in numbers.

And his viral 'shoulder charge' on San Diego cornerback Lowell Rose in Thursday’s clash against the Chargers is proof the 'Hayne Plane' is getting the hang of all aspects of his new sport.

"The coaches are always on about lowering the shoulder, getting ready for contact.

"So to come out tonight and do it after all that training, all the hours on the field ... to understand it tonight and really lower my pads was exciting."

"I'm not going to disrespect any other player, but I will tell you that I think Jarryd Hayne is a tough guy," 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula added of the hit.

Tomsula is not much more talkative than Wayne Bennett and would not be drawn on Hayne’s chances of making the roster.

"Everything will be clear cut after the weekend," he deadpanned.

"I saw him catch passes. I saw him run the ball (against the Chargers).

"There were a couple of good plays and, like everyone there were a couple there ... we have to keep working on."
