Halladay keeps Phillies afloat

Roy Halladay tossed a complete game as the Philadelphia Phillies edged the Washington Nationals on Wednesday, while Detroit won again.

Halladay blanked the Nationals with eight shutout innings, allowing only a pair of singles to Adam LaRoche, before nearly handing the game away in the ninth as his pitch count ticked past 120.

The right-hander gave up a lead-off double to Rick Ankiel, a single to Jayson Werth and a one-out RBI to Laynce Nix to draw Washington within 3-1.

Danny Espinosa singled to shortstop to drive Werth home and suddenly the Nats were within a run with two outs still in hand.

But Halladay was up to the challenge, fanning pinch-hitter Matt Stairs and Ivan Rodriguez for the team's second win of the season.

Ben Francisco and Placido Polanco had RBI singles for the Phillies, and Halladay scored a free run after Ryan Howard was hit by a wild pitch from John Lannan with bases loaded in the fifth.

Elsewhere, the Detroit Tigers had their second straight walk-off win against the Texas Rangers thanks to Brandon Inge's solo home run.

Inge smacked closer Darren Oliver over the left-field wall with one out in the ninth, defeating the Rangers 5-4 and securing Detroit's first series win of the season.

The Tigers went behind 2-0 on RBI singles to Nelson Cruz and David Murphy in the sixth, but Brennan Boesch and Inge drove in runs at the bottom of the inning to keep the game tied up.

In other results, the New York Yankees battered Orioles starting pitcher Chris Tillman to defeat Baltimore 7-4, the San Francisco Giants edged the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 and the St Louis Cardinals pummelled the Arizona Diamondbacks 15-5 on Lance Berkman's grand slam.

The Chicago Cubs defeated the Houston Astros 9-5, the Chicago White Sox collapsed to a 7-4 loss to the Oakland Athletics in the 10th, the Toronto Blue Jays rallied past the Seattle Mariners 8-3 and the Florida Marlins rolled over the Atlanta Braves 5-1.

The Milwaukee Brewers shutout the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-0, the San Diego Padres edged the Cincinnati Reds 3-2, the Kansas City Royals felled the Minnesota Twins 10-5 and the Cleveland Indians fell 4-3 in the 12th at the Los Angeles Angels.

Finally, the Colorado Rockies defeated the New York Mets 5-4 and the Tampa Bay Rays' visit to the Boston Red Sox was postponed due to rain.
