Hackett scotches comeback talk

Australian four-time Olympic gold medallist Grant Hackett has been out of the pool since retiring in 2008.

Talk of a sensational return surfaced, though, after the 34-year-old began training under veteran coach Denis Cotterell on the Gold Coast.

Hackett, however, is adamant he will not be following in the footsteps of fellow Australian Ian Thorpe, who made an unsuccessful return to the pool in a bid to qualify for the 2012 London Games.

"I would be 36 for Rio [de Janeiro - which hosts the 2016 Olympics]," he said. "That's probably just getting on a bit too much.

"Because I've been through so much this year, I just wanted to get back into the squad and enjoy a bit of time with the boys and the camaraderie.

"I just want to get really fit. That is kind of my goal over the next six or seven months — get to a good level of fitness again. Having a bit of time to put into a bit of swimming and gym work is good fun, that is all.

"I couldn't do it on my own. It's not the sort of sport I enjoy just going down to the pool and doing it on my own. Denis lets me swim with the squad in bits and pieces when I want to, that’s good fun."
