Giro d'Italia leader Michael Matthews cemented his place at the top of the general classification by winning the third stage.

The Orica GreenEdge man prevailed in a frantic sprint finish at the end of Monday's 136-kilometre race between Rapallo and Sestri Levante.

Matthews, who finished seventh on stage two, edged out Fabio Felline of Trek Factory Racing by a bike length at the end, with BMC Racing's Philippe Gilbert taking third.

"It's been a dream come true so far for this Giro d'Italia," Matthews said.

"We planned to get the team time trial win and this was another big goal for us. We reconned it, we knew what was coming.

"It was a tough day, only a short stage. That made it hard for us and we were lucky to have guys in the breakaway.

"They set me up perfectly for the sprint and I can't thank them enough."

Matthews now leads the general classification by six seconds from team-mate Simon Clarke, while fellow Orica GreenEdge men Simon Gerrans and Esteban Chaves make up the top four.

Pavel Kochetkov of Katusha took the points in the second climb of the day at Barbagelata and led by up to a minute throughout much of the descent before being caught as the road flattened out.

There were worrying scenes during that descent, when AG2R-La Mondiale rider Domenico Pozzovivo suffered a heavy crash and lay face down on the road.

After receiving medical treatment, the Italian was carried into an ambulance on a stretcher, and it was later confirmed that he was conscious and lucid.
