Queensland Racing has banned five greyhound trainers for life in the wake of the live-baiting scandal which has recently rocked the sport.

Last month, an ABC documentary showed evidence of live piglets, possums and rabbits being chased and eventually killed by dogs during training sessions.

Animal rights groups in Australia have called for an end to self-regulation in the greyhound industry, while Peter Caillard, chairman of Greyhound Racing Victoria, made a "personal decision" to step down from his post in the wake of the revelations.

On Monday, Queensland Racing issued a statement declaring that five trainers had been banned for life, with one case adjourned and another referred for further investigation.

"As a board we determined the actions of these individuals proved they should not be considered fit and proper persons to continue to be involved in the greyhound industry," said Queensland Racing chairman Kevin Dixon.

"The conduct we saw from these people in the evidence provided to us is not only against the rules of greyhound racing, it is deplorable by its very nature.

"There is no place for anyone who engages in this type of conduct in the industry.

"Racing Queensland has a zero-tolerance on animal cruelty and we remain firmly committed to ensuring anyone who engages in this type of behaviour is no longer part of the industry.

"The greyhound industry has been challenged and it is up to the controlling body and the participants to ensure animal cruelty is eradicated from the industry."
