Daniel Geale victorious, Paul Gallen wins first fight

Wood, though, may have beaten Anthony Mundine among others, but Geale proved much too good at the Hordern Pavillion, dropping his 35-year-old opponent on several occasions through a series of quality combinations that left Wood flailing.

Wood's attempt to intimidate Geale at the weigh-in didn't seem to phase Geale whatsoever as he came out in the first round and set the tone for the night by dropping Wood to the canvas.

More damage was to follow, however, as Wood was dropped once again in the second, although he managed to suggest to referee Charlie Lucas that it was a low blow and Geale was probably wrongly deducted a point.

Wood started to find his rhythm in the fourth, but that was simply the cue for Geale to drop him once again with a right cross before the man known as the Real Geale upped the tempo and hit his opponent with a flurry of punches in the fifth.

Wood could barely stand and almost fell through the ropes but the bout was allowed to continue into the sixth round, although there would be no seventh as the Wood camp finished the fight.

Geale will now turn his attention to WBA champion Gennady Golovkin.

Earlier in the evening, Gallen came back from a first-round knockdown to defeat 22-year-old Brisbane-based New Zealander Herman Ene-Purcell.

Gallen hit the deck early in the first round as he was caught just above his left eye by Purcell but that was almost as good as it got for him as the Cronulla skipper upped the ante from then on.

Finding his groove, Gallen hit Purcell with a series of hooks during the second before referee Gary Dean ended he fight just under three minutes into the round, although the pair did continue to fight as both camps tried to restrain their men.

"I don't know where it come from but he got me good and the next thing I know I was on my arse," said Gallen in the Sydney Morning Herald when talking about the initial knockdown.

"I've never been dropped before, to be honest with you. Even in footy I've never been dropped but I shook it off pretty quick."
