It was Australia's second medal sweep of the night with Mitch Larkin, Josh Beaver and Matson Lawson also finishing one-two-three in the men's 200m backstroke.

A world record was on the cards as Cate Campbell touched the wall at halfway ahead of Britta Steffen's supersuit mark before fading in the final stages of the race as Bronte nearly managed to overhaul her older sister.

NSW shooter Warren Potent finally tasted gold as he won the 50m prone rifle competition while Laetisha Scanlan won the women's trap.

Both the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras maintained their perfect records with comfortable victories.

However, Australia had a poor night on the track with fastest women Melissa Breen crashing out of the 100m at the semi-final stage and Zoe Buckman failed to qualify for the 1500m final.

In other Commonwealth Games news, Kemar Bailey-Cole took gold in the 100 metres with a time of 10 seconds.

The Jamaican finished a tenth of a second clear of England's Adam Gemili having powered through the final 50m to claim victory courtesy of a season-best time of 10 seconds flat.

Bailey-Cole appeared to limp after crossing the line while Gemili was required to hold off late pressure from Jamaica's Nickel Ashmeade to secure his silver medal.

Nigeria's Blessing Okagbare took the women's 100m with a late surge in the final quarter to finish ahead of Jamaican Veronica Campbell-Brown.

Kerron Stewart was third as Okagbare built on her quick runs in the heats to set a new Games record of 10.85secs.

Sultana Frizell successfully defended her hammer throw title with an effort of 71.97 metres before Jamaica's O'Dayne Richards won the shot put with a score of 21.61m - both athletes breaking respective Games records.

There was more Home Nation success in the pool as English 18-year-old Sophie Taylor held off Australia's Lorna Tonks in the 100m breaststroke.

Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa made up for missing out on 100m breaststroke gold by winning a dramatic 50m race after Audrey Lacroix had added gold to the silver she won in New Delhi by taking first in the 200m butterfly.

Nick Matthew again proved too strong for James Willstrop in a repeat of Delhi's men's squash singles final while Nicol David picked up the second Commonwealth gold of her career with a 12-10 11-2 11-5 victory over England's Laura Massaro.

In the men's pairs lawn bowls, Alex Marshall and Paul Foster hammered Malaysian opposition 20-3 to secure Scotland's 12th gold of the Games - surpassing their previous best of 11, set in Melbourne eight years ago.

South Africa defeated Northern Ireland 19-10 to claim gold in the men's triples.

New Zealand's Sally Johnston shot a Games record of 620.7 points to win the women's 50m rifle prone, there was gold for compatriot Richard Patterson in the men's 85kg Group A final of the weightlifting while Cameroon's Marie Fegue clinched gold in the women's 69kg category.
