Khan talks up Mayweather fight in September

Bleacher Report. Boxing. Amir Khan

A change in date for this year's Ramadan festival has presented Amir Khan with the opportunity to take on Floyd Mayweather Jr and the British boxer is refusing to rule out a September fight.

Mayweather extended his professional unbeaten record to 48-0 courtesy of a unanimous points win over Manny Pacquiao in last Saturday's blockbuster WBO welterweight showdown in Las Vegas - the American's penultimate fight before retirement.

The 38-year-old intends to hang up his gloves in four months time and Khan has emerged as a possible farewell opponent, given Ramadan - a sacred month in the Islamic calendar - ends on July 17 instead of September.

"I'm not ruling out fighting in September because it's possible that it could happen," said Khan.

"Mayweather only fights in mid-September and Ramadan will be a little earlier this year, which helps.

"It gives me enough time to get the training done. So it can happen in September."

Khan, who will meet American Chris Algieri on May 30 added: "I need to win this fight if I'm to get near any of the big names in boxing. It's time to fight Chris Algieri, I'm not going to be fighting Mayweather until I win this fight.

"Winning this fight is everything to me. I'm not looking past Chris because I've made that mistake in the past. There are bigger fights out there for me, but this is my focus."
