The Hockeyroos have been eliminated from the main group at the Champions Trophy despite a 1-0 win over powerhouse Germany.
Following their upset loss to New Zealand, Australia's women needed a least a two-goal win to be a chance of progressing to the medal rounds but had to settle for a one-goal margin with a late goal to Jodie Schulz.
The result means the Hockeyroos can finish no better than fifth at the tournament in the Netherlands.
Meanwhile Argentina and South Korea's 1-1 draw was enough for both sides to progress to the medal rounds.
Korea went into their final Pool A game with the world champions knowing anything better than a 2-0 defeat would see them qualify for the medal round, and they got off to the perfect start when Park Mi Hyun gave them the lead midway through the first half.
Argentina were on a 13-match winning streak heading into the match, and did their best to preserve that run as captain Luciana Aymar equalised 13 minutes from time.
Neither team could find a winner in the dying minutes, but the result was enough to send both sides through to the last four as the top sides in Pool A.
They will be joined in the medal round by the Netherlands and New Zealand, who played out a goalless draw to ensure they finished top of Pool B.
Netherlands captain Maartje Paumen had two excellent chances for the host nation, while Katie Glynn and Kayla Sharland had the best of the chances for the Kiwis, only to be denied by Dutch goalkeeper Floortje Engels.
England and China saw their chances of qualifying for the medal stages end after they played out a goalless draw in Pool A.
Helen Richardson missed a late penalty for England, which means both teams will now battle it out for fifth to eighth positions.
