Rice sorry for homophobic slur

Rice sorry for homophobic slur

09/05/2010 11:17:40 PM

Australian swimmer Stephanie Rice has issued an apology after she reportedly posted a homophobic slur on Twitter.

Rice's slip came after the Wallabies' last-ditch win over South Africa in the Tri Nations rugby on Sunday morning (AEST).

The Olympic gold medallist tweeted: ''Suck on that faggots!''

"Probs the best game I've ever seen!! Well done boys."

But Rice has since apologised and deleted the posting.

The comment has attracted criticism from gay former rugby league star and actor Ian Roberts, who labelled Rice a "complete idiot".

"She is an idiot ... and anyone who continues to endorse her as an athlete is an idiot as well," Roberts told News Ltd.

"And I say that with a very sad tone in my voice. What a fool."

The scandal follows an emotional month for the Beijing triple-gold medallist.

Four weeks ago Rice broke down in tears while announcing a shoulder injury would force her out of next month's Commonwealth Games.

LOL Ian Roberts. Who really cares what he thinks? It's just being over-sensitive and politically correct.

Don't sweat it Steph, I've called the Boks worse than that in the heat of the game. As for the over stressed Ian Roberts, he needs to get over himself!

I hope she is not looking for a visa to Africa any time too soon! Mark-it's not just about political correctness, it's a very offensive word like calling a black person n*****.

We are all human beings and make mistakes and must learn to internalise externalise our feelings to be corrected and so..Grow, Ms rice just didn thats. Like it or not thats what she feels and you can not change her except educate her on what you believe in,she can not have your view imprison her mind and thinking by yours. I have on several occasions told my fellow black lads that some people will always think of you as they like whether you complain or not so get over it! because judgement is being past all the time on you being different so Mr Ian grow up and worry about your life unless if some one was in your face that would not be right. Its the lifestyle you have chosen and very aware of teh unfortunate social perceptions unfair or not its the life you took and the world we live in, am sure you are old enough to know what this means.A word of advice(if you take it) dont keep negative company or seek to cultivate unpleasant negativity and people, life will be so much better for yo

Ian Roberts is entitled to get as upset as he wants but to then rant, rave and threaten just demonstrates that he is an agressive and violent person

It amusing how the people who are not in the minority who are used as a means of degrading others always tell others to "get over it", "being a little precious". Mind you it is always straight guys.

This is precisely what is wrong with celebrity sports. It is to be expected that people like Stephanie speaks with such vernacular - without any thought or regard for others. After all, nobody expects to enage a sportsperson in intelligent conversation. What is horrible is the manner in which the media have taken the words of some dumb going-to-seed cow and given them prominence in order to 'move units'.
