Red Wings set NHL home record

Red Wings set NHL home record

02/20/2012 06:28:54 AM

The Detroit Red Wings extended their home winning streak to a record 23 games after beating the San Jose Sharks 3-2 at Joe Louis Arena.

The Red Wings, who broke the NHL's single-season record of 20 on Tuesday, have now surpassed an NHL record 22 wins in a row that the Boston Bruins achieved over 80 years ago.

Henrik Zetterberg and Drew Miller gave Detroit a two-goal lead midway through the second period before Logan Couture closed the gap for the Sharks.

Darren Helm then restored the buffer in the third period for the Red Wings but San Jose ensured a few nervous moments late when Patrick Marleau made it 3-2 with under five minutes remaining.

The Vancouver Canucks backed up their 6-2 hammering of the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday, peppering the Edmonton Oilers' goal in a 5-2 victory on Sunday.

Oilers starting goalie Nikolai Khabibulin had to deal with 17 shots in the opening 20 minutes before he succumbed to a groin injury at the first break.

Vancouver had five individual scorers with Henrik and Daniel Sedin netting to keep the Canucks two points behind the record-breaking Red Wings in the Western Conference.

The New York Rangers beat rock-bottom Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2 thanks to Derek Stephan's goal 22 seconds into overtime.

Blue Jackets captain Rick Nash tied the score with less than two minutes remaining in regulation time but endured chants of 'we don't want you' from fans after his rumoured transfer dealings.

The Winnipeg Jets won their third match in a row to tie the Toronto Maple Leafs for eighth place in the Eastern Conference with a 5-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

Bryan Little scored twice for the Jets.

The New Jersey Devils continued their run over the Montreal Canadiens with a 3-1 win.

The Canadiens have not beaten the Devils at home since 2008.

Derek Roy starred for the Buffalo Sabres with two goals and an assist to help them to a comprehensive 6-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Visiting Nashville Predators defeated the Dallas Stars 3-2 at the American Airlines Center, the Anaheim Ducks shut out the Florida Panthers in a 2-0 win and the Chicago Blackhawks made it three straight wins in a 3-1 result over the St Louis Blues after trailing 1-0.

Niklas Backstrom made a career-high 48 saves for the Minnesota Wild to deny the Boston Bruins in a 2-0 win.
