The Pittsburgh Penguins bounced back from consecutive losses to defeat the Montreal Canadiens 7-6 in a thrilling NHL clash.

In an all-out attacking contest that featured four lead changes, Brandon Sutter was the hero when his goal 52 seconds into overtime gave the Penguins the win at the Bell Centre.

Matt Cooke and Chris Kunitz both netted twice each, while star Sidney Crosby also found the back of the net in the victory.

Brian Gionta scored twice - including the goal that sent the match into overtime - while Max Pacioretty, Brandon Prust, David Desharnais and P.K. Subban were all on target for Montreal as they stretched their run of games without a regulation loss to 10.

The victory keeps Pittsburgh in second place in the Eastern Conference, two points behind the Boston Bruins, who posted a 3-2 win over the Tamp Bay Lightning.

Boston trailed 2-0 after the first period but were back on level terms in the space of two minutes in the second stanza when they scored two power-play goals.

Brad Marchand sealed the comeback victory with another power-play goal with just under three minutes remaining in the match.

The Buffalo Sabres notched their third straight victory with a 4-3 shootout win over the New Jersey Devils.

Sabres goalie Ryan Miller made 28 saves throughout the match and denied both of the Devils' shots in the shootout, while captain Jason Pominville scored twice in regulation and held his nerve in the shootout to help his side to victory.

The Phoenix Coyotes also triumphed in a shootout with Steve Sullivan the hero in a 5-4 victory over the Anaheim Ducks.

Sullivan, who scored his first goal in 14 games with 6:28 remaining in the third period to send the match into overtime, netted the only goal in the shootout, while goalie Mike Smith made 31 saves including all three in the shootout.

In other matches, the Carolina Hurricanes romped to a 6-2 victory over the Florida Panthers, the Washington Capitals posted a 3-0 shutout win over the Winnipeg Jets and the Philadelphia Flyers edged the Ottawa Senators 2-1.

In the day's final two clashes the Vancouver Canucks defeated defending Stanley Cup champions the Los Angeles Kings 5-2 and the San Jose Sharks knocked off the Nashville Predators 2-1.
