Panthers pounce as Penguins freeze

02/02/2012 07:48:46 AM

The Florida Panthers regained top spot in the NHL's Southeast Division on Wednesday (local time), while the Pittsburgh Penguins had their run of good form ended.

Right wing Mikael Samuelsson struck a brace as the Panthers recorded a 4-2 win over the Washington Capitals, taking their place atop the Southeast.

The Panthers were never headed in the encounter at the BankAtlantic Center, with Shawn Matthias sealing the win with a late goal.

The winners are a point clear of the Capitals, who fell to a second straight loss, in the division.

Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Penguins had their winning run ended at eight matches after a 1-0 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Clarke MacArthur collected a quick pass from Mikhail Grabovski and rounded Penguins goaltender Brent Johnson before scoring his 16th goal of the season.

It was the perfect response from the Maple Leafs, who conceded a late goal before going down in a shootout to the Penguins on Tuesday.

Goalie Henrik Lundqvist made 34 saves as the Eastern Conference-leading New York Rangers edged the Buffalo Sabres with a 1-0 shootout win.

Ryan Callahan's wrist shot was the pivotal moment as the Rangers won the shootout 2-1.

Elsewhere, left wing Jamie Benn scored once and provided two assists as the Dallas Stars romped to a 6-2 win against the Anaheim Ducks, who had their six-game home winning streak ended.

Drew Doughty scored with one second remaining to lift the Los Angeles Kings to a 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

With the sides headed for overtime, Doughty controlled a loose puck and fired home to give the Kings a second consecutive win.
